Park Avenue Desk Chair

After a long deliberating process of selecting a chair, a five month process, i am finally sitting in my new Hon chair. It's quite a process selecting a chair and just the right fabric to go along with it. I'm glad i held out for what i wanted. Mark helped me pick it up today.

The arm rest allow my arms to lay directly into the keyboard and mouse. I also have room to pull them in, closer to my body, allowing extended periods of typing.

I'm happy with the color, a dark green. There were hundred of colors to choose from. I knew i wanted green, but which one among the dozen. BTW i learned a new word during this process, viz. celadon, a pale sea-green. I see celadon as a typical 1950s color. My chair is a rich medium-dark green which blends well with the henna cherry wood.

I'll need to sit in it longer, but so far it's very comfortable. Yes my friends, this means it will be even harder to drag me away from my computer.

There's one bad thing about the chair; i can't play my guitar in it, unless i scoot to the front.

I would like to thank my monther and grand father who made this chair possible for me.

Coffee Grinder and Determinism

After finishing off my pre-ground coffee, i can now use my new grinder (thanks Mom). I don't usually blog about to things in one article, but i'm a bit caffeinated, so you're getting two for the price of one today.

Well i'm still learning how to use this grinder. The grinder itself is easy to use, measuring the beans is tough. So too many beans, a find ground, and using dark roasted beans, led Michael and i to a very strong brew[1].

In combination with this Irish Cream Syrup the coffee makes a fine morning beverage.

As i was driving to work the other day i saw a license plate DTERMND. This got me thinking about the word "determined", it's root "term", and committing yourself to something. I understand "term" as the end of a linear object. For example the bus terminal is the end of the bus route; likewise for trains. Grepping /usr/share/dict/words i also find exterminate, midterm, terminable, terminate, terminology, and watermelon. OK watermelon doesn't count.

Determined mostly means getting a result after some analysis. But for now i'm more interested in it's "devoting full strength and concentrated effort to" [WordNet] definition. This is in complete harmony with the the concept above. A person who is determined doesn't see an end, well a close end at least, to their actions.

Anyway, last weekend (or two weekends ago) i cleaned the apartment. Today, i'm determined to clean my other home. That is, my home directory on my computer.

[1] Doesn't this sound like a great title for a Wallace and Gromit film?

The Polar Express

Last night Mom and i went to see The Polar Express. It was fantastic. It's based on the book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg.

This movie is computer generated. Movement of the actors was recorded and digitally transferred to models. A close up on Tom Hanks face reveals tens of points of interest to record his facial expressions. That's one element that makes this movie so amazing. In my opinion the other is the waves and wrinkles in clothing as a character moves. In other movies like Shrek 2, you will see this represented when Prince Charming (or whoever) whips his hair around. I'm curious to know if this movement is recorded manually or derived via physics from the movement of joints and intersection of objects. Either way, it looked real... very real, like when the boy's mother says goodnight to him.

My favorite scenes include just about anything with the railroad, including hot chocolate, meeting the hobo, skiing on the train, and the breaking ice. This movie is filled with adventure and excitement. I highly recommend all people, children or adults, see this movie.

Mom's Cards

Over the past few years my mom has gotten into making special cards. I've created an album with several that she's sent me. The latest one is for Halloween.
