Chicago Open Rideshare Dataset - Getting Started · Sam Blogs

tags: PostGIS, Leaflet, GIS

I was recently reading Steve Vance and John Greenfield’s article summarizing data from the City of Chicago’s publishing of anonymized ride hailing data, and decided to look into the dataset on my own. The data shows all trips on Uber, Lyft, and Via from 11/1/2018 through 12/31/2018, starting and/or ending in the City of Chicago. The data includes the below for each rideshare trip:

Printable Congressional District Maps: Behind The Scenes – Joshua Tauberer's Archived Blog

Josh face

Today I’m releasing print-quality maps of congressional districts, with street-level detail and county border lines. This has been one of the most sought-after resources based on emails I’ve received over the last some four years and I don’t think you can find this anywhere else. (At least not comprehensively for the whole nation. Local state clerk’s offices may have them. NationalAtlas.gov has maps but not with very much detail.)

One Way To Spot A Partisan Gerrymander | FiveThirtyEight

On March 26, challengers to North Carolina’s congressional map will argue before the Supreme Court that it is a partisan gerrymander — that is, the district boundaries were drawn to benefit one political party, the GOP, in a way that violates the Constitution. The challengers are using a variety of quantitative tools to make their argument, including a metric called “partisan bias” that tries to evaluate how skewed a map is by looking at the...

America’s Empty-Church Problem - The Atlantic

blue cross on red and white radiating stripes

The culture war over religious morality has faded; in its place is something much worse.

Over the past decade, pollsters charted something remarkable: Americans—long known for their piety—were fleeing organized religion in increasing numbers. The vast majority still believed in God. But the share that rejected any religious affiliation was growing fast, rising from 6 percent in 1992 to 22 percent in 2014. Among Millennials, the figure was 35 percent.

The Problem With Our Democracy Isn't Gerrymandering. It's Integers

As everyone knows, the U.S. Congress has grown increasingly un-representative. We have states where the population is evenly split among Democrats and Republications, but where–thanks to partisan gerrymandering–the number of House members is grossly skewed in favor of one party. Even without gerrymandering, voters for the losing side in many House districts feel, justifiably, that they have no representation in Congress.

Home - Open Collective

Open Collective logo

While the Internet has been very good so far at helping people do things together, it is still very difficult for groups to collect money and use it transparently. As a result, we see initiatives, projects, movements popping up here and there that disappear quickly from lack of funding. Imagine how many wonderful things don’t happen in the world because funding - which is oxygen for most organizations - is difficult to sustain.
