Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run

This past sunday i ran in my first race, the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. I've been training for the past few months adding 1 mile per week. I started with running 2 miles. But by the time i reached 4 miles, i ran into a hurdle. I had extreme numbness and a pins and needles effect in my feet.

After taking a break for a few weeks i got back to the gym. While explaining this to a coworker he suggested i get orthotics. Custom orthotics cost hundreds of dollars. So being the DIY that i am, i ripped out the soles from an old pair of sneakers cut them just right and placed them under my current soles. Would you believe it, it worked. I was so happy that day, i ran 8 miles.

Understanding they worked, i went back to Metro Run & Walk to buy insoles with better arch support.

The race itself was exciting. After waiting on long lines for the port-a-johns, and checking my back at the last minute, i scarfed down a bananna some water, and made my way to the purple corral.

I normally run for 3 minutes and walk for 2. But for the first mile i just ran it. Starting with mile 2 i started the interval timer. As the race progressed i found that i'd start running early. Ie. i kept a 3:30 to 1:30 ratio. Then moved to a 4:00 to 1:00 ratio. The last mile i just ran.

My net time was 1 hour 55 minutes, 25 minutes better than i expected. I blame the spirit of the race and beauty of the course.
